As a user of YouTube you probably have noticed how the videos served up to you
are tailored to your interests based on your viewing history. While this
initially is a good thing, seeing stuff that interests you, over time you
become isolated in a collection of videos based mostly on your past interests.
Sometimes you might find the videos are repetitive and possibly already ones
that you have watched before. When new videos are posted on the subjects that
interest you, they are brought to your attention. But in times of a lull in
new video content, you might want to venture into other subject matter to see
something different that you find interesting. If this is something that you
have experienced, read on...

Here, in four steps, is how to see what videos are currently popular on
YouTube on the YouTube home page (at "https://www.youtube.com/") without
having your YouTube video browsing history influence the videos shown.
Normally, the way to achieve this would be to clear your cookies to
eliminate your browsing history. This procedure avoids doing that.

Note: In the case that you do regularly flush your browser cookies and when
you go to the YouTube home page you see "Try searching to get started" then
go to step 3 below.

The Steps
---------

1a. In Google Chrome or other Chromium based browsers, open a New Incognito
    (or "InPrivate" in Edge) Window:
    Press Ctrl + Shift + N (on Windows / Linux / ChromeOS)
Press Command + Shift + N (on macOS)

or

1b. In Mozilla Firefox, open a New Private Window:
Press Ctrl + Shift + P (on Windows / Linux)
Press Command + Shift + P (on macOS)

2. In the window that appears, enter "youtu.be" (without the quotes) into the
address bar and press Enter / Return. Now you will see "Try searching to
   get started."

3. Enter a search query in the search bar, for a subject you would like to
lookup a video for (e.g. computers), on the top of the page and press Enter /
Return. Unfortunately this one video search and selection may have a slight
affect on the results that will be shown, but this is the best we can do.

4. Now select a video to watch but be sure to pick a video that is not
"Sponsored" (in small print). Once the video starts playing, after any Ads
or Commercials, watch some (a few seconds) or all of the video and then
delete the "watch?v=XXXXXXXXXXX" part off of the current video address and
then press Enter / Return. (e.g. Making
   "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXXXXXXXXXX" into
   "https://www.youtube.com/".)

Now you will see the YouTube home page appear with videos that are not based on
your browsing history, but rather, on the currently popular videos on YouTube.

I find this procedure useful for discovering new videos that I do not normally
get exposed to by the YouTube algorithms, while still keeping my YouTube
cookies intact.

Enjoy!

PS There is also the "Trending" link ( https://www.youtube.com/feed/trending )
located on the YouTube home page's left side navigation panel under
"Explore" that will show you currently popular videos, which is easy to get
to. (You might need to click the hamburger button (three horizontal lines)
in the upper left corner of the YouTube home page to see the "Explore"
item.) I still prefer to use the procedure above to get a tiled YouTube
home page, which I prefer the formatting of over the "Trending" page, with
   popular videos there.
